This volume celebrates the hundredth anniversary of the Bohr atom, which first appeared in the trilogy published by Niels Bohr in the Philosophical Magazine in 1913. The first part of this seminal text is reproduced below, following a survey of earlier atomic modeling, a summary of the contents of Bohr’s text, and a brief analysis of Bohr’s role in the subsequent development of quantum physics.

In 1965, in honor of Bohr the Institute of Physics at the University of NIELS BOHR Lived from: 1885 to 1962 Put forward atomic model in: 1913 Nickname for his model: Energy Level Model Description of his model: Bohr’s atom like Rutherford’s contained a dense, positive nucleus. He expanded on Rutherford’s ideas, turning his attention to describing the electron. In 1913 Bohr analysed the spectral lines of hydrogen. This meant that he observed the coloured lines (wavelengths given by a spectroscope). Since the lines were not continuous like rainbow, the electrons were not giving of energy continuously.

(Eds.) Renowned scientists, including a 2012 Physics Nobel laureate, present their view on Bohr’s foundational contributions and his legacy in present-day quantum physics This fourteenth volume in the Poincaré Seminar Series is devoted to Niels Bohr, his foundational contributions to understanding atomic structure and quantum theory and their continuing importance today. This book contains the following chapters: - Tomas Bohr, Keeping Things Open; - Olivier Darrigol, Bohr's Trilogy of 1913; -John Heilbron, The Mind that Created the Bohr Atom; - Serge Haroche 1913- discovered that electrons move around the nucleus in orb… they orbit the nucleus at specific distances and at specific e… electrons in an orbit move to another orbit by absorbing elect… 1932-Discovered the neutron which explained imbalance between… This model was proposed in 1913 by Niels Bohr and was really an expansion on the Rutherford model of 1911. The Rutherford model had several flaws that the Bohr model overcame. Bohr’s model proved that electrons orbit around the nucleus as set distances. When the electron changes orbit, it does so in a what is called a quantum leap. Bohr held a lectureship in physics at Copenhagen University from 1913 to 1914 and went on to hold a similar position at Victoria University in Manchester from 1914 to 1916.
